New Name, New Blog, New Photos

It's been forever ( 2.5 years) since I've posted any of my photography, time to start again.  This is not a 365 blog anymore, I cant make that daily commitment :(  I'll just be posting favorite personal and professional  shots as I take them.  Go back a few posts to see what I've been shooting over the last 2 years.

Here's a few shots I took of Ryan last week.

Street Photography

I love walking around town, shooting random strangers going about their business.  These were shot in Saskatoon Summer 2010

Maternity and baby

here's a few shots I did for a maternity and subsequent baby shoot I did last fall.

safety violation

This one is dedicated to my mother who recently completed her occupational health and safety officer training courses.  Now lets see how fast she can spot the infraction and write up a report citing the offence.

day 29 10-01-09

I had ample time this morning to go out and get my shot o' the day but instead I stayed home and had a nice long hot shower. So naturally I lingered and wasted time till I was late for work. No time for photos now, right...wrong! It's all about being at the right place at the right time with your camera in hand. I drove by this guy and saw photo op written all over him. I wanted to stop but fear and shyness had me keep on driving. Fear of looking silly, fear of people getting annoyed by paparazzi snapping photos of them, fear of ______ (insert irrational fear here). A block away I was kicking myself for letting opportunity pass me by. Two blocks later I pulled a u-turn and went back to find my bus stop man. I stopped across the street, which was a better vantage point than when I drove by him the first time. I probably should have rolled down my window, but c'mon I didn't really want to draw that much attention. I took aim and with one shot, I had what I wanted. If it had been a flower or a cow I would have taken 30 just to make sure I got one I liked, but that was it, just one and I drove away. And you know what? I was thrilled, not because I'd shot my best photo ever, but because I'd shot it at all. I really enjoy a photojournalistic style of photography. In particular I love street photography, as I've always been a people watcher, but until recently I would never dare. It's silly really, because if I was working as a photographer for a newspaper or a magazine I would think nothing of snapping photos of this guy in the rain, in fact I'd look at it as a challenge, because it's my job. It is now... because what I want for my images is storytelling and emotion. While it's lovely to capture a stunning image of a beautiful thing, and I will continue that endeavor, I have a new goal...

day 19...09-21-09

This is Victor, a homeless man I talked to for more than 45 minutes this afternoon. He shared with me all his wisdom and experience. He talked (a mile a minute) of God and Satan and the Vietnam war. We exchanged gifts, I gave him my pocket change and he gave me this photo. People walking by gave us plenty of odd looks. Some thought he was weird and some gave me looks of pity like I was being forced to endure his soliloquy on the glory of God. There was really no need, I was there by choice and he brightened my otherwise gloomy day. Does God not teach us to love all people? He lives this life by choice and he speaks what he believes, what he knows to be true. I'd rather spend time with a person like this than someone who's deepest desire is to impress me with a fancy car or an expensive watch.

day 13...09-15-09

I shot this on my way out of the library tonight after Camera Club. It's not a super strong photo by any means but I shot it with "my purse camera" and I posted it more because I saw an opportunity and I stopped to capture it, rather than letting it pass by and that is one part of the whole lesson to be learned by this project .

Shot this one just cause it made me laugh, another random opportunity. She was set up on the grassy meridian just outside the Tim Horton's on 8th St. reading a book and enjoying her timmies. Right after this I witnessed a nearly massive accident. I was in the passenger side and had my camera on and in my hand with the window rolled down, as a car turned left in front of us on College Dr. on to Preston and was almost t-boned by the car in the lane to the left of us. I watched in slow motion as the the car beside me missed the other car by mere feet. I was paralized and did not get the near miss shot, but the whole time I was wondering if I would be in the right place at the right time to shoot the impact and the aftermath if it happened... nope not this time, thankfully. It would have been nasty.
